FAQ

You've got questions, we've got answers. And jerky...so much jerky.
  • Better Bovine is a beef jerky brand that uses high-quality and clean ingredients, making beef jerky that is good for you and tastes delicious. Better Bovine offers two types of beef jerky: (1) our signature wagyu beef jerky and (2) extra lean beef jerky, our refined take on classic beef jerky.

We source from humane, ethical, sustainable farmers who raise cattle on a 100% grass-fed diet. We take this beef and add salt and pepper. That’s it. No sugary marinades, no nonsensical additives, no harmful preservatives. The result is an unparalleled taste, tender mouthfeel, and distinct flavour profile that celebrates the meat itself.

  • Beef. Salt. Pepper. That's it. 3 ingredients. Yes, you read that right. We pride ourselves on keeping it simple and letting our premium beef do the talking. We'll be releasing new flavours in the future, but our promise to you is that we will never use sugary marinades, nonsensical additives, or harmful preservatives.

  • Better Bovine wagyu beef jerky tastes like premium steak with unique tasting notes of chestnut, umami, and honey. It's quite the contrast to traditional beef jerky. That’s because we use the flank cut from 100% grass-fed wagyu cows. Unlike traditional beef jerky, we don't need to hide behind sugary marinades and additives you can’t even pronounce. This can only be achieved because we exclusively use high-quality ingredients.

Better Bovine 100% grassfed beef jerky is our refined take on classic beef jerky. We continue to use 100% grass-fed beef with a pinch of salt and pepper. Like classic beef jerky, there's a satisfying bite and scrumptious beefy flavour. Unlike classic beef jerky, there's no carbs or sugar, no harmful additives or preservatives.

  • Each bag of beef jerky has a shelf life of around 12 months while enclosed. After you open it, it's best consumed within 5 days. We recommend storing the beef jerky in a cool, dry location out of sunlight (like a pantry).

Occasionally, a bag of beef jerky may tear in transit. Because our product contains no preservatives, prolonged exposure to the open air can make the beef jerky defective. If you encounter this, just take a photo to document it, dispose of it, and send us the photo - we'll issue a refund or replacement.

  • We blow em' out of the water. Most other jerky has 20+ ingredients including things you can’t even pronounce, preservatives like nitrates and tons of sugar. Some beef jerky even has more sugar than protein. We’re in a class of our own.

Fun fact, a lot of the other guys add sugary marinades to mask low-quality beef. They add preservatives (e.g., nitrates, culture celery) to extend their shelf life to several years. They add additives to make their beef jerky more tender. All of this is done to line their pockets while delivering beef jerky that barely resembles beef and has the texture of tree bark. To top it all off, it tastes terrible it is bad for you.

To no one's surprise, good things happen when you do the complete opposite. Starting with high-quality beef and avoiding all the bad-for-you ingredients creates a beef jerky that is more nutrient-dense, delicious, and tender. Each bite delivers more protein, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals. In fact, this is one of the most bioavailable proteins in the world.

  • Grass-fed beef is significantly higher in omega 3s, antioxidants, beta-carotene, vitamin B, thiamin, riboflavin, calcium, magnesium and potassium. Grass-fed beef tends to have lower levels of saturated fat. Grass-fed and grass-finished beef comes from cattle that eat nothing but grass and forage for their entire lives - as nature intended.

Did you know there’s a difference between 100% grass-fed and 'grass-fed' beef. The former is what we use. Cattle eat grass for their entire lives. There isn't a universally accepted definition for 'grass-fed' beef. In fact, all cattle feed on grass at some point. That means cattle could have a nibble of grass and be classified as grass-fed. It's a dishonest, but real practice. A lot of the 'grass-fed' beef that you see is typically finished on corn or grain. It's a marketing gimmick used to trick you. Try asking them if their beef is 100% grassfed and watch them dance around a response.

Better Bovine uses 100% grass-fed beef. Raised on grass and finished on grass. Simple.

  • We believe the cleaner, the better. Sodium nitrate is often used as a preservative in a lot of cured meats including beef jerky. Studies have shown excessive addition of sodium nitrate as a preservative in cured meats can lead to acute health issues and is associated with an increased risk of cancer, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, high blood pressure, and others. Some companies market that they use no preservatives like sodium nitrate but end up using a bunch of cultured celery extract, potassium sorbate, ascorbic acid, sulphites, and vinegar. Beef jerky, and anything edible, shouldn't last for decades. You're here to enjoy a healthy and nutritious snack, not harmful additives.

  • Yes! All the beef used in Better Bovine beef jerky products is Halal-certified (FIANZ & AGAHP). While we do not display a Halal certification logo on our packaging, rest assured that our products meet Halal standards. At Better Bovine, we’re dedicated to delivering premium-quality products at fair prices. To help us achieve this, we’ve chosen to avoid the additional costs associated with adding certification logos, such as Halal and gluten-free, to our packaging. Rest assured, however, that our products meet these standards.

  • For starters, traditional beef jerky companies use cheap, low-quality beef. They use sugary marinades in an attempt to make it chewable and palatable. Finally, they use a cocktail of additives, preservatives, and chemicals to make their beef jerky last for years. The last step is important because they minimally dehydrate the beef to create a higher yield, which is only possible with the additives. In the end, you end up getting a less nutrient-dense beef jerky.

If you’ve read this far, it’s because you understand we don’t cut corners by using additives and low-quality beef - we use 100% grass-fed beef. That being said, we pride ourselves on still being able to provide our products at affordable prices.

  • First off, it's not mold. You’ll know mold when you see it, but this stuff is super flavorful fat. Because we’re not ultra-processed, our dehydration and preparation method actually renders a bit of the natural fats on the beef. It gives the beef jerky a little extra flavor and is pretty delicious if we do say so ourselves. You may also find salt crystals on your beef jerky. As you know, salt is crucial for beef jerky, and helps the protein retain its own natural juices. This helps create a tender beef jerky.
